PAWNEE CITY HISTORICAL SOCIETY - Located on the east edge of Pawnee City on Highway 50/8, the museum features 22 buildings with over 25,000 items to view. From Larry the Cable Guy's (Dan Whitney) family barn to U.S. Senator Kenneth Wherry's library, there is something of interest for the whole family. Kids will find dress-up clothes in the log cabin or can do a scavenger hunt as the family tours the museum buildings. Exhibits not to be missed include a home-built experimental Tailwind airplane, five one-room country schools, the home of the first governor of the State of Nebraska, and unique collections of over 800 types of barbed wire.
In 1968, a group of interested citizens purchased land in east Pawnee City and formed the Pawnee City Historical Society & Museum. The museum comprises 22 buildings with over 25,000 items on display. Totally dependent on donations, the museum does not receive any state funding. Fundraising events include breakfasts of sausage, with French toast (a wide variety of homemade breads) or freshly made waffles, and Election Day spaghetti dinners. Our recent events include: Children's Carnival Games, Haunted Halloween Trail and Hayrack Ride, and Live Nativity. We are proud members of the Nebraska WanderNebraska Program.
