Attractions
Welcome you to Pawnee City. Recently our community has blossomed to become a great little town to visit for a day, week or a lifetime. If you are visiting our community we have put together below some ideas for "One perfect day in Pawnee City".
One Perfect Day in Pawnee City
Some of the most beautiful sunrises in the world are seen rising from the east over our rolling hills. After a hearty breakfast at our
VFW Club, 644 F Street, or a Cup of Joe at the
Little Brown Jug, 715 F Street, your first stop may want to be at
Heavenly Treasures Quilt Store , 700 9th Street,
www.heavenlytreasurerspc.com. This one hundred year old building was formerly the First Baptist Church and has been converted into one of the area's most unique quilting and fabric stores. People from all over the Midwest travel to Pawnee City to enjoy what owner Marie Glenn says it is the "best little quilt store this side of Heaven".
Pawnee City is a great town to walk about. Our new community walking/biking trail provides a great walking experience throughout the community. A short walk away is the amazing
Pedal Clinic at 701 I Street. The Pawnee Pedal Museum is the dream of Bill and Elsie Sunneberg. They have taken this former church and doctor's office and transformed it into the "Pride of Pawnee County". This is an amazing display of tractor and car pedal toys. Bill has traveled the country in search of these antiques with some toys over 70 years old. You will be amazed at the beauty of these meticulously restored tractor and car pedal toys. The Pedal Clinic is open by appointment only and on special occasions so be sure to call (402) 852-2655 or (402) 852-6195 before you go
Now you can head east of town to the
Pawnee Historical Society & Museum,
www.pawneecountyhistory.com/pchsm. Twenty-two historic buildings occupy seven acres of Society and Museum grounds and protect this remarkable historical collection. Visitors find many old-time implements of farm and home, antique furnishings and tools, vintage vehicles, rare photos and books, unique handcraft items, personal possessions of both ordinary and famous people, along with a large assortment of other interesting Pawnee County mementos on display for public examination. Yvonne Dalluge is the manager and she works tirelessly to make this a source of pride for all Pawnee Citians. Summer hours April thru Oct. Tues - Friday 9-2:30pm, Saturday 9-4pm and Sunday 1-4pm. Winter hours Tues. - Thurs. 9-4pm. Other times please call 402-852-3131 for private tours.
As you head back downtown you can enjoy lunch at several restaurants including the
Parkside Cafe, 601 4th Street, 402-852-2422;
VFW Club, 644 F Street, 402-852-2931;
Subway, 626 6th Street, 402-8522120 or a quick bite at
Casey's General Store, 942 F Street, 402-852-2337. If the weather is sunny and bright why no take a picnic lunch from Subway and head to either the north park or south park to smell the roses and roast beef.
The
North Park, 14th and E Street, also has one of the state's nicest swimming pools that is open between Memorial Day and Labor Day as well as playground equipment, picnic tables and shelters. The
South Park, 3rd and F Street, also has picnic facilities along with a tennis court.
Our historic
County Courthouse is located on the town square. The one hundred year old courthouse is the center of town and on every major holiday dozens of volunteers help put up and display hundreds of American flags around the courthouse in a beautiful tribute to all our fallen veterans. Each flag represents one of our community's veterans and has his name on a plaque by each flag. This beautiful display will bring tears to your eyes as you reflect on these hometown heroes and the service they provided our great nation.
Now it is time to get into your car and take a mini tour of our town. Heading north of town on highway 50 you turn left on 18th Street and go two blocks to find
Fairview Golf Club. This nine-hole golf course is one of the few sand green golf courses left in the country. Instead of grass greens like most modern courses this course is made up of 9 sand greens that are made of sand similar to how the original game was played. If you are a golfer this will be an experience of a lifetime and one you will want to tell all your friends about. The Club holds tournaments around Labor Day and Memorial Day weekends and every Thursday night during the summer.
As you drive through Pawnee City you will want to take note of the many Redbud trees in town. In 2006 the Nebraska Legislature designated Pawnee City as the "Red Bud Capitol of Nebraska". Our town has planted over 400 redbud trees in the last 4 years alone and has a goal of having a redbud tree on every lot in town. Be sure to come visit during the month of April and see the Redbuds burst into beauty.
Just on the south edge of the golf course you will turn east and travel down 14th Street, which is also named
Dan Whitney Drive (a.k.a. Larry the Cable Guy). Dan grew up with his family in Pawnee City before moving on to fame and fortune he found as part of the "Blue Collar Comedy Tour". Continuing on east at the top of the hill you find the
Prairie Hill Sports Complex. The Prairie Hill Sports Complex is one of the community's showcase facilities offering a sports complex for baseball, softball and soccer fields. The sports complex is located on the northeast corner of town and is connected to the new hiker/biker trail that allows all ages to safely walk or bike from the center of town to the sports complex.
You must now head to our world famous
SchillingBridge Winery and MicroBrewery, 8 blocks east of 14th and F Streets. In just 5 short years Mike and Sharon Schilling have built an amazing business that is the pride of all Pawnee City. Visit the Nation's FIRST Farm Winery/Microbrewery combination as Mike and Sharon are "Bridging the gap between the Wine Connoisseur & the Beer Enthusiast". Their wines have received national and international recognition as "best of show". Be sure to visit their web site
www.schillingbridgewinery.com to find out about their upcoming events and wine tastings.
The city pond and campsite was recently renamed the "Pawnderosa". It has several campsites and a pond that is stocked for fishing for young and old alike. You can make camping reservations by calling the city offices at 402-852-2781 or by email to
pcityhall@neb.rr.com.
As your day comes to a close you are about to get into your car and head home. Now the thought will hit you as you realize that Pawnee City is a great place to visit but an even better place to live.
